Silent Partner 2011

Silent Partner

We sit outside,

A warm November,

He, on upturned flowerpot,

I, on bench beside.

He sniffs the air, and I

Attempt

To imitate;

His ultra-sensitivity

Can smell the world –

The universe,

While I with zinc deficiency

Curse nostril x.

I aim my nose, as he does.

Nope, it doesn’t help.

Stretching upwards on the wall,

Clawing, sharpening,

His spine a spring,

The face and tongue express –

A nothing.

Focusing, mouth falling open,

Tongue a sliver

I’m the object of his life.

Silent partner suddenly

And always.
