And Then It’s Over

 

You read a story.  Alice Munro.

Then in the middle, of a sudden.

You’re back in Manhattan,

Twenty something,

Very slim and conscious of it;

Dressed in candy-stripey slacks that cling:

You’re singing young; time lacking meaning;

In the park on Riverside –

Then hark, you’re back in Sweden

Once again

In bed,

The story partly read

With you not knowing what it said

Now almost eighty, thinking,

“Then it’s over.”
