The Many Nuances of Sorrow, Grief, Anguish, Woe & Regret

All five mean distress of mind,

Each nuance hard-defined.

A sense of loss,

Guilt or remorse

Is sorrow.

Grief is instant, its tomorrow may be sorrow;

But grief pricks, stings – it is

Pain affecting feelings.

Anguish’ grief is torturing;

Grief with dread;

With fear not yet come to a head.

Woe is inconsolable distress.

Woe is Job (God bless…)

Regret is glued to disappointment; longing that can never be

Fulfilled;

A guilt that doesn’t lessen.

Nuance to escape

With insight’s penetration:

The power to see what’s not there

For the ordinary mind.

If you’ve a mind to see it, right

Behind the nuances of sorrow –

When you mourn for something gone –

Lies the morn. So be it.

Definitions based on Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary (one of my favorite editions).
