If They Ask: What Do You Want?

If They Ask: What Do You Want?

I do not want.
I work and let the aim flow through me.
It is art and all its implications:
Polish, depth, finesse, processing –
Whatsoever makes good art.
So,
Through re-thinkings, tinkerings, eliminations;
Many hours of flowering thoughts,
Produce is produced; wrought
Through humor, reference, experience,
And always aiming at the genuine,
Discovering that one is not as complex
As one thought one was;
More half-done and many-leveled:
Always a surprise.
Discovering that simple going on
Connects synapses of intelligence
And observation: powers unknown.
Unsuspected gifts and lacks.
Stacks and stacks of new disclosures
Brought on by the writing.

If they ask, “What do you want today?” (and everyday)
Just say, “I do not want a thing”,
And let the bell of creativity ring
Through me.

Utterly, Utterly Lazy

     Utterly, Utterly Lazy

I can be utterly, utterly –

Quadruple utterly

Lazy.

That’s me.

Tempted to put on my shirt

Inside out,

Backwards, frontwards,

Not caring which route.

Tempted to not put my foot in my shoes,

But to bend the backs, break them

Or any way fake way to get into

Just ‘cause I cannot be bothered to take them

And put them on carefully.

Utterly, utterly is an unfortunate

Euphemized statement,

Meant to confess the degree

With a light delicacy.

Yesiree, that is the real me

Under it all,

Everything else being shawl

To disguise and protect it,

And that’s the absurdity

Of being lazy.

Some books by Arlene Corwin (just a few)

Keen About The Meaning

It wasn’t my intention to write such a ‘long song’. Always having the instinct to keep a poem the length of an A4, the original intention was to write 2 separate poems. Then I realized that the two poems were saying the same thing.

        Keen About The Meaning

We should be keen about the meaning!

(Isn’t that a darling rhyme?)

What, you ask, what meaning what?

It’s life of course!

A meaning that defines its course, it’s force, its progress.

Life’s life you may say. It may be,

Yet as far as life’s intent,

We tend to minimize its main objective.

Not survival – something more: a true ascent.

Some go by it. Some deny it.

We should chase it because life’s a race

Against an absolute and unrelenting, limited ol’ spell

Worth probing not just for surviving or for breathing well.

There are yummy things worth aiming at:

This game we play, take part in

And would like to win

Contains as trophies: peace of mind and understanding,

Satisfaction and wellbeing.

One more gain: freedom from fear –

Taking in fate’s whimsies with a cheerful air.

(Dalai Lama seems to do it. Others too. You’ve seen it, know it).

Why demean this most significant of questions

When the question in itself

Opens the highway to

Distress-lessness;

Happiness!

Everyday I read poetic utterances:

Poetry of loves lost, never felt, hungered after,

Longed for laughter,

Sorrow at the world’s condition,

Unexpressed scorn and submission.

Everything one undergoes

And everyone one comes across;

Cynicism, doubt, distrust,

Mistrust, injustice, disenchantment.

Yet, I’m always here to say:

It’s true and happening BUT circumstance,

Each energy’s phenomenon

Contains its equal counterpart;

The negative that has a heart:

A parallel but better.

Life has meaning and intention to the letter.

Unmotivated Tears

           Unmotivated Tears

 I used to criticize

The eyes

Of those I knew

Who, at

Drops of a hat

Shed tears of ardor: God-knows-what.

Ascribing it

To vitamins and lack thereof,

Past, present and/or too much ‘love’.

Too something/something out of balance;

Nothing but a prevalence

Of yin or yang

Ganging up

On both those ducts.

Uncaring and unfeelingly – I used to be.

Now, at eighty-three it’s me.

I may need hormone therapy.

Or is it age sagacity –

Unmotivated tears

Based on a grasp of life’s chimere

That takes in all –

An all which makes one engineered

By tears

One must defer to.

Thinking In The Sun

           Thinking In The Sun

Preoccupied with origins and ends,

Our real-life friends –

One knows that what is left is means: the present tense –

Past gone, what lies ahead not yet in sight’s attendance.

The rest belongs to speculation.

Reasoning has limits.

Also left: the intellect and character,

Not neglecting chance or grace;

Who gets what, does what, makes choices that

Put two and two together to get four – or not.

Sitting here out in the sun

What better theme to think upon,

The senses dong what they do,

Interpreted by you-know-who:

Me, you.

The eye sees change [wind blowing grass].

The ear hears wind [that’s blowing grass].

The arm feels sun [that’s growing grass].

The brain sees all as change.

Where is the toot, toot of an absolute?

One would recruit an absolute

To make things stable

If one could/were only able.

 So one sits awaiting, cogitating,

Meditating, celebrating one’s existence,

Hoping, praying it’s not nonsense

In the end,

As its end,

At the end.
