The Boom Of June
The bloom of June
Can be a boom of June –
And sometimes not.
It can be cool or hot.
In any case June’s shot-in-arm,
Always a balm;
A feel of ‘up’ ‘cause winter’s gone;
Rhododendron in our garden,
Jasmine waiting for its time,
Azalea in its dazzling prime,
Weeds abundant and resplendent
In their way,
Though they get in the way
Of something flowery that grows
One presupposes.
In each case, the face of summer’s
Long, light days Is coming to its peak
Just as I speak,
June booming with each blooming
And one’s humour at the top.
I wish that I could stop it there,
But fall and winter will be here
And I myself be eighty-eight,
Taking joyful part in June’s unique,
Discrete yet indiscreetness for the moment.
