Never Old 2014

Never Old

This is not old stuff.

There can never be enough declaring:

Love,

Devotion,

Dedication

To a birthday in

A non-

Birthday card style.

The cards say yearly, “happy birthday”!

Corny,

Just a bit.

Of course I want you to be happy.

But there’s more to it

Than

Happy New Year, Happy Christmas…happy, happy…

Just a little

Superficial.

One would wish the most preeminent, illustrious for you:

An all-inclusive lexicon of jubilation:

Words and miracles on your behalf.

All one can do is fall back on the old cliché:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Cause to get all daft

And un-evolved,

You are prized and cherished

And much loved!

Birthday Mine Once Again

Birthday Mine Once Again

Whizzing by,

Drizzling down from nowtime’s sky;

Fizzling out.

Dazing amongst frazzled thoughts –

Puzzling thoughts that buzz around

Those fuzzy feelings

of foreboding

One cannot define or face.

A souvenir.

Day-after’s bland reminder:

Birth dates, time and passing.

Seventy & Eight

Seventy and eight:

You’ve definitely

Set aside some vanity.

What is it but priority?

And some priorities have changed.

It’s called acceptance.

Skin that’s re-arranged itself

Without permission.

When you’re nearing birthdays

Each and every

Twelvth damned month,

You shun

The cant if you’re observant.

This has that… and that’s a pain,

Marriages have come and gone,

You’ve eaten everything on offer.

Gone the need to entertain

The suffering’s more neutralized;

So many friends and kin have died.

You’ve channeled drives

That used to thrive on pleasure.

With a birthday coming up

You’re going down each second’s unit

So immeasurably tiny you can’t count it.

Here is where it gets didactic:

Birthdays coning up – don’t hope but have it.

As for vanity, retract it.

That’s it.

Do You Know You’re Three Today? 2012

Do You Know That You’re Three Today?

Do you know that you’re three today?

Three and free, you have inhabited

Planet Earth just twelve times three.

Not much really.

Eyes that look at us are yellow or

They’re black, depending

On your mood. You’ve grown.

You know a lot,

Developed fears, developed confidence

And habits, signals,

Even sound that sounds like words

Which we’ve begun to grasp.

You’re changing everyday.

And still we worry-

Are we doing what we ought to do?

What’s right for you?

You’re handsome, graceful, smart.

You give so much without a forethought

Or an effort.

Just to watch you makes us cry.

Happy Birthday Albert –

Even though

You’ve no

idea it is.

Happy Birthday, Daddy 2008

              Happy Birthday, Daddy

You’re a hundred today

In a realm of some sort,

Far away,

Invisible, for

I can’t make you out, but

Your are there,

Working out things you couldn’t here.

There’s not much I remember

When I think about you as a father.

But I recollect some precious things

That made you daddy.

It’s attachment.

It’s a mystery.

It’s love that has no feelings –

But it’s love.

Daddy without sentiment;

Karmic plan to make me what I am.

The only dad

I’d ever have – or had. I’m glad.

Be happy!

Happy birthday!

Happy Birthday Anyway 2008

                 Happy Birthday Anyway

Seventy at last!

Was it something you looked forward to?

Modest you.

No parties, presents you insist.

Besides, it’s February cold.

You want to put your date on hold

Till June and summer.

(I have a strong suspicion you don’t care

If, how, what, when or where).

We talked about accomplishment.

In fact, we talk about it constantly:

Our verbal key.

All our closest friends want travel,

Theatre, concerts; but we

Talk about accomplishing

Our special thing.

You’re seventy. Your springboards:

Music, technique, singing,

Possibly recording.

Growing through the meditative.

Prayerful, playful you

Is through

With custom for the sake of custom.

You don’t need the confirmation

Others seem to need.

You get it from inside.

And yet you are affirmed.

Everybody loves you.

Happy Birthday, anyway.

In spite of your requests.

In spite of all your protests.

Happy Birthday to a party

That will not have any guests.

Happy Birthday for your balance

Both expressed and unexpressed.

Happy birthday, anyway.

And Happy all the rests…!

Everyone Should Have A Friend 2008

              Everyone Should Have A Friend

Have a friend who calls on birthdays.

Birthdays aren’t much,

Or are

As much as moment’s hour

You pushed from the womb.

There’s always room

On planet earth,

Plant earth

For one more flower.

Therefore,

Everyone should have a friend

Remembering

As confirmation.

Yesterday you phoned.

Re-inspired 2009

Re-inspired

A stagnant pen,

Vacant paper.

Quiet hand, then

I remember:

Ha! Your birthday;

Ah, your birthday!

One plus seventy!

Lunch,

Then town,

A walk around.

Not much change,

But new each morning,

As it should be.

We’ll eat lunch

With more discrimination.

Munch by munch,

Crunch by crunch

A cool familiarity.

We’ll celebrate.

One and seventy:

A number only.

A Celebration Of… 1992

              A Celebration Of…

Just because you are my friend,

Gentle, kind, and plucky,

Don’t think this poem’s just duty bound

And birthday yarn

When I say Judy:

Lucky, lovely, ducky. –

Nicest Pisces of them all.
