I Love Talent 2001

I Love Talent

I love talent!

I just love talent!

Talent is a grace, an ace –

A freebee: blessing,

Something that you get for nothing;

Something that’s a bank, a chest,

A toolbox/treasure all-in-one.

How to leach it, turn it

From a talent to a skill;

Tease it, teach it

How to be its best,

A handmaiden

And guest of soul.

Toil at the risk of pain,

Refinement but

The world’s disdain

Align themselves

In talent,

And I love talent.

There Is A Talent 1993

There Is A Talent, They Said”
There is a talent”, they said.

But nobody chose to continue the thread:

Nobody knew what to do with such mead.

All that the talented nature could do

Was to lead itself slowly from form unto form;

Throw itself wholly from norm into norm,

Un-tormented by form, taking form by storm –

Subtle, gathering tact in the rhythm

That picks up a speed growing out of itself.

It pleads with the readable world for a shelf.

Talented person sits up in the bed,

Expressing the talent that sits in the head:

The dormant, fomented, the fearless and brave,

With rhythms insistent the gifted ones have,

He savors, he flavors. Carefully both.

There is the talent.

Which of us knows

The flowering from which

All talent grows?

Vines intertwined of meaning and form,

Life on the line,

Refining, defining

The scope of that chain of invention.

Talent Helps 2004

    Talent Helps

All the virtues

To make envious

A world around:

Persistent,

Strong, kind,

Disciplined.

(There virtues stop)

Popular

And very, very,

Very rich.

The glitch

Is talent –

Does he know

He hasn’t got it?

That a scale of one to ten

Shows that he weighs in low,

And cannot fight it?

Does his staying power count?

Should he be out there, a playing clown?

Should he cower while I grunt?

Or does he steal an era

From the standard that he sets,

Send a generation walking

In the wrong direction?

Or, is he its mirror that selection

Just reflects?

Oh, if only he had talent!
